I will remind you that the law on foreign agents has not yet come into force, but it will come into force in a few weeks, and we will see how the process will develop, the Georgian lawmaker said in an interview with Rustavi 2 TV channel on Monday.
In June, Georgian Parliament leader Shalva Papuashvili, who signed the law in place of President Salome Zurabishvili, said that the Justice Ministry had 60 days to prepare the necessary regulations and open an electronic portal for organizations.
After that, the non-governmental organizations and media covered by the document will have to register and publish a financial statement from 2023.
The law applies to non-governmental organizations and media outlets that receive more than 20 percent of their funding from abroad.
These entities will be required to submit a statement of income and expenses to the Ministry of Justice in January of every year.
If they fail to comply with this obligation, they will be fined 25,000 laris (about 9,100 dollars).
If they fail to submit the declaration after the fine, they will be charged 20,000 laris for each month of overdue payment.
