Lula and Italian president discuss fight against hunger and poverty

lula-1-2
Brasilia, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is to receive his Italian counterpart, Sergio Mattarella, and both will discuss here regional and global issues, such as the alliance against hunger and poverty.

According to a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting at the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Power, will address issues such as the Brazilian leadership of the G20 (group of the 19 largest economies in the world and the European and African Unions), the Italian leadership of the G7 and the reform of the institutions of governance.

Mattarella, who is making the first visit of an Italian ruler to Brazil in 24 years, arrived this Sunday and will have agendas in the country until July 19, including engagements in Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Rio Grande do Sul, a state affected by heavy floods.

In this last territorial division, the visitor will meet tomorrow with members of the Italian community and will show solidarity for the floods that affected the region in May.

Lula and Mattarella will renew an agreement that expired at the beginning of 2023 on reciprocal recognition regarding the conversion of driver’s licenses.

The understanding provides that a person with a driver’s license from one of the countries who establishes legal residence in the other nation may convert that authorization without undergoing theoretical and practical tests, except in special situations.

In addition, memorandums of understanding are expected to be signed between the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation and the University of Turin, and with the University of Sao Paulo.

Such visit takes place in the context of the commemorations of the 150th anniversary of Italian immigration to the South American country and should contribute to highlight Brazil-Italy ties.
