Outstanding choreographer Lizt Alfonso received the National Choreography Award from the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC) with this show.
The press release noted that the company had been highly acclaimed in Martinique, a beautiful Caribbean island where the fusion dance style that characterizes the company has been welcomed on several occasions.
Although Lizt Alfonso is the author of the choreographic concept and general technique of the work, “Habana Fenix” also features scenes choreographed by dancers and teachers trained at the LADC, like Yadira Hernandez, Diana Fernandez, Claudia Valdivia, Laura Abreu, Daira Jay, and Yohara Garcia.
After attending the first performance of “Habana Fenix” in Havana on May 5, 2023, singer-songwriter Silvio Rodriguez said about the show, “In ‘Habana Fenix,’ the ethnic, historic, and everyday aspect that shapes us is pronounced, separated, and fused.”
Eminent and remembered Cuban historian Eusebio Leal, whose words were the seed that inspired this work, said about Lizt Alfonso, “She has shown, with concrete facts, that it is possible to start from the solitude of a project and reach the world dimension that the ballet company that bears her name has today,” the press release noted.
