From the total number of candidates, 7,437 withdrew, so 1,516 are competing for 250 seats in the Assembly.
The voting day will last until 19:00 hours, local time, and may be extended for a maximum period of five hours in all or some polling stations, as decided by the High Electoral Commission.
The electoral process is conducted entirely under judicial supervision, from the nomination of the aspirants to the announcement of the results.
The Arab Socialist Baath Party, currently in government, is running in the elections with 169 candidates on its National Unity list, which also includes 16 representing all 14 organizations forming the National Progressive Front Coalition, led by the Baath itself.
Despite calls for boycott and attempts to disrupt the process and prevent citizens from exercising their right to vote by terrorist groups and separatist militias in areas outside government control, authorities persisted in holding the elections on their constitutional date without any change.
