The head of the National Assembly of Power (ANPP, parliament) Esteban Lazo, -also attending the meeting along with government ministers- urged that structure of the legislature to promote an urgent change, ‘with accelerated steps’ to solve problems that depend on systematic work.
The parliamentarians’ analysis was based on a report presented by the Minister of Economy and Planning (MEP) Joaquin Alonso on the progress of the island’s economy plan at the end of the first half of the year, and the prospects until December.
In this regard, the head of that agency outlined the complexities faced by the Caribbean country to ensure the central balance of food, the standard family basket and the delivery of products to state entities, increased by the policy of economic suffocation of the U.S. government.
However, he pointed out there are ‘potentialities that are not exploited’ in the territories, and there is also ‘lack of control over the destination of productions foreseen in the municipal strategies’.
In this sense, explained the Minister of the MEP, they activated training plans for leaders of provinces and municipalities, contributed with successful experiences of other territories in the matter of price formation and agreement, local self-sufficiency, among other topics.
According to the deputies who took the floor, it is not enough to change the structures at the municipal level, but to produce more and use municipal finances to provide resources to these structures, directed from the government of each territory.
The linkage with other economic players is essential for this purpose, said Congressman Carlos César Torres, for whom it is vital to identify the leading producers and accompany them financially to achieve increases in the collection of food for the population.
Previously, the legislators evaluated the status of compliance with the agreements in the economic area, adopted in the previous session of the legislative body.
According to the agenda of the Economic Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of People’s Power, this afternoon, Comptroller General Gladys Bejerano will present the agency’s action plan for the control of the State budget.
In this context, the parliamentary structure will evaluate the behavior of indicators associated with the budget execution and the use of finances in the Caribbean nation, as well as the result of the liquidation of the items for the year 2023.
