AU concludes preparatory meeting for political dialogue in Sudan

ua-sudan-2-1
Addis Ababa, Jul 15 (Prensa Latina) The preparatory meeting to initiate a political dialogue in Sudan and peacefully resolve the conflict concluded at the headquarters of the African Union (AU), considered an important milestone that laid the groundwork for this process.

The AU’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security revealed that the five-day meeting with the participation of Sudanese stakeholders included recommendations related to ending armed clashes, facilitating humanitarian access and ensuring inclusiveness in the dialogue.

It also included setting the agenda, addressing transitional justice and defining transitional governance.

The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African continental organization urged all political and civilian actors in Khartoum to prioritize the supreme interests of the country above all else. Together, they emphasize the importance of ending the war and restoring normalcy, the publication indicated.

Both reaffirmed their commitment to support stakeholders to achieve a negotiated and consensual resolution to the crisis, as well as to continue interaction with women, youth, professionals, traditional authorities and other sectors of society.

On the other hand, the chairman of the AU High-Level Panel on Sudan, Mohamed Ibn Chambas, warned during the discussions about the serious humanitarian situation in that African country and urged an urgent end to the war.

Chambas, who is also the High Representative for the Silencing of Arms, reaffirmed that military means are not the solution and encouraged the Sudanese to find common ground through dialogue.

He urged urgent actions and solutions to restore a state on the verge of collapse and to do everything possible to avoid it because the impact will be catastrophic. In this regard, the AU and IGAD created this platform for dialogue to bring together all parts of the Sudanese society, he stressed.

Finally, he stressed that the solution to the crisis lies in the hands of the Sudanese people, who must take responsibility for negotiating a new governance architecture that puts the collective interests of the people first.
