Syria ready to hold its parliamentary elections

Damascus, Jul 13 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian authorities set all preparations for the holding of elections of the fourth legislature of the People's Assembly, Parliament, scheduled for next Monday, July 15.

Despite attempts by some terrorist groups and separatist militias to prevent citizens from exercising their right to vote, the elections will be held on their constitutional date without any changes, the head of the High Judicial Electoral Commission, Jihad Murad.

Murad explained that the electoral process is conducted completely under judicial supervision, from the nomination of candidates to the announcement of the results.

The senior authority clarified that 8,151 polling stations were equipped in all provinces and large residential and labor concentrations were taken into account.

Meanwhile, the official pointed out that the total number of candidates reached 8,953, of which 7,437 candidates withdrew, and 1,516 remain in the race for the 250 seats in the People’s Assembly.

As for logistical equipment, Murad confirmed that the Interior Ministry had secured all supplies for the electoral process of secret ink, envelopes, tally sheets and office supplies.

Regarding the date and schedule of the process, the judicial official detailed that the electoral propaganda must cease 24 hours before the voting day, which will begin at 07:00, local time, and finish at 19:00 of that day.

Article 64 of the Electoral Law authorized the Supreme Judicial Committee for Elections to extend the voting period for a maximum of five hours in all or some polling stations, he asserted.

Sources consulted by Prensa Latina, informed that the Arab Socialist Baath Party, currently in Government, enters the elections with strength through 169 candidates included in its National Unity list.

That list includes 16 candidates representing the 14 parties forming the National Progressive Front Coalition, led by Al-Baath.

Among candidates are entrepreneurs, industrialists, journalists, workers, farmers, tribal figures and war wounded, and most promote building a new and strong Syria as their electoral slogan.

In the previous elections held in 2020, 33% of the electoral roll voted, and the current elections pose a challenge for Syrians to overcome, particularly in terms of achieving an acceptable popular turnout and electing parliamentarians who are up to the many challenges facing the country.
