Salvadoran economy faces a hard test

San Salvador, Jul 13 (Prensa Latina) Salvadoran economy tested the Government's capacity to face the attrition of prices in agricultural markets, something that marks the current events in the country.

After a warning from President Nayib Bukele to food and agricultural products traders that he would take measures for abuse, a Government offensive was unleashed to get fruit and vegetable traders and importers to lower their prices.

The warning was preceded by the installation of 24 agro-markets where the population can purchase goods, mainly vegetables, at slightly lower prices, but it raised doubts as to how long this can be maintained since the country imports about 90% from neighboring countries.

Salvadoran population is increasingly suffering from a difficult situation, which has put them at the edge to cover basic needs, such as food, housing and payment of basic services, revealed a study published this week, which showed that the economy is the main problem faced by the population.

Likewise, in the news this week was the extension once again of the exception regime that allowed the arrest of nearly 82,000 alleged gang members and collaborators, and which polarizes the support of Salvadorans for its results in the security of the nation.

In statements this week to Prensa Latina, the former presidential candidate for the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), Manuel “Chino” Flores expressed that the problem is not the regime, but the abuses it covers up and the capture of innocent people.

The politician criticized the anomalies of this policy, which divides his compatriots due to the “abusive method” of its application, which is not even removed to intimidate opponents, according to him.

Meanwhile, the country stepped up its offensive against dengue fever after declaring an epidemiological alert on July 2 following the death of three children from the disease and an upsurge in the number of positive cases. During the week, fumigations and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites were ramped up in an attempt to contain the disease.

In addition, the arrest of three Ecuadoreans in Pacific waters while transporting 750 kilograms of cocaine valued at USD$19 million was also highlighted, ratifying the authorities’ determination to confront drug trafficking in international waters.
