Russia: US missiles in Germany are another step in the Cold War

Moscow, Jul 13 (Prensa Latina) The United States' decision to deploy its long-range missiles in Germany brings the world closer to a new Cold War, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitri Peskov said.

The steps by Washington and Brussels are going in that direction, as history previously showed, they may even cause a direct confrontation, the Russian presidential spokesman noted in an interview with journalist Pavel Zarubin.

Germany, the United States, France and the United Kingdom are directly involved in the conflict over Ukraine, Peskov stressed.

On Wednesday, NATO released a statement during its summit in Washington, according to which the United States will begin deploying its long-range missiles on German territory for a lasting presence in 2026.

The US arsenal will consist of SM-6 missiles, Tomahawk and conceptual hypersonic weapons, which have a significantly longer range than the missiles currently stationed in Europe.

According to the statement, this measure seeks to show the United States’ commitment to NATO and its contribution to European integrated deterrence.

Shortly before, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov described this decision as “a link in the policy of escalation, an element of intimidation that currently nearly becomes the fundamental component of the policy of NATO and the United States in relation to Russia.”
