GSFo2AYbMAAg-5Y-1
Mexico City, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) Latin American and Caribbean countries, in unity and based on technical cooperation, are making progress towards the goal of achieving food security with sovereignty in the region, the general coordinator of Agriculture of Mexico, Santiago Arguello, said.

According to a press release from the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development, at the closing ceremony of the annual meeting of the Platform for Climate Action in Agriculture (PLACA) 2024, held here, the official said that work and specific commitments were consolidated.

These are “focused on addressing the challenge of climate change in agriculture, with the development of public policies, public-private partnerships and the involvement of development and research agencies from different countries,” he said.

In his opinion, everything that was discussed during the two days of work enriches the agenda of the PLACA, and with the assignment of the co-chairmanship to Peru, the experiences of each country and the direct participation of international organizations, among other elements, greater results will be achieved, he said.

Among the measures recommended to reduce the effects of climate change in this area are the preparation of soil studies and agroeconomic technical sheets, training in agroclimatic analysis, development of precision agriculture and agroclimatic technical roundtables.

Arguello reported that Mexico has set up 13 such roundtables that operate in coordination with the National Institute of Forestry, Agriculture and Livestock Research.

During the meeting, the representative of Guatemala, Rafael López, acknowledged the work of the host country to promote synergies and collaborative practices between PLACA and other international organizations, with a view to moving towards productive agricultural development that is resilient and adapted to the effects of climate change.
