In an individual classification led by the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), the best placed in the region are the Colombians Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain Victorius), in 12th place, more than nine minutes behind the leader, and Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers ), winner of the Grande Boucle in 2019, in a lower seat.
The other three Latin Americans in the run are Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EE Education-Easypost), who is in 31st place in the fight for the yellow jersey, the Colombian Harold Tejada (Astana Qazaqstan Team), in 88th, and his compatriot Fernando Gaviria (Movistar), at 150.
Carapaz stormed the top of the Tour de France in the third stage, between Plaisance and Turin, but then lost ground.
After Bernal’s historic victory in 2019, the only Latin American to conquer the most famous long-distance race in cycling, only has been Ecuadorian Tokyo Olympic champion who has reached the podium on the Champs-Elysées avenue, third in 2021.
In other categories, the best classified in the region in the mountains is Carapaz, in 12th place, while Tejada is 30th in points.
Among the young competitors of the classic, Buitrago is in a decent fourth position, eight minutes and 35 seconds behind the Belgian star Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step), runner-up behind Pogacar in the general classification.
