Colombian VP rejects escalation in southwest of the country

Francia-Marquez-1-1
Bogotá, Jul 12 (Prensa Latina) The vice president of Colombia, Francia Márquez, rejected the situation of violence shaking up the southwest of the country and asked for more intervention from security agents to safeguard the lives of residents.

“Just one day after our caravan was attacked with rifle fire, I received with pain in my soul the news of an attack on the Suárez Police Station, leaving some people injured, to whom I express my affection and solidarity,” the vice president wrote on X.

Márquez also warned about the dangers faced by people in Piendamó, where a helicopter overflying the town of Los Mangos was attacked, the same as in Santander de Quilichao, in Argelia, and in many other municipalities in the same department.

“This situation cannot continue, and I want to ratify the request for us to surround the population and of course support the public force to contribute to the search for peace and tranquility of the communities,” Márquez stated.

In her message, the vice president alluded to the attack that her security team suffered yesterday in Cauca, as well as the impact that an Army helicopter received in the midst of the clashes between the troops and the Central Staff armed group in Tunía.

Heavy fighting took place this morning between the Army and the dissidents of the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in the Pescador sector, between the municipalities of Tunía and Piendamó.

At least two soldiers were wounded, after they were attacked with explosive drones. An attack against the Suárez Police station, in the department of Cauca, was also reported. The incident left three civilians and a police officer injured.
