UN criticism on women’s rights in Afghanistan rejected

Kabul, Jul 11 (Prensa Latina) The spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, Zabihullah Mujahid, on Thursday rejected a recent report from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and claimed that the criticisms of that UN agency are unfounded.

On Wednesday, UNAMA released a report criticizing the practices of the Afghan Ministry of Virtue and Vice, particularly those affecting women and girls.

The UN agency expressed its concern over the restrictions imposed on women in Afghanistan; mainly the human rights situation and the practices of the ministry from August 15, 2021, to March 31, 2024.

The document highlights that certain methods used by the Ministry of Virtue and Vice to enforce its directives have resulted in human rights violations.

In response, Mujahid said on Thursday that UNAMA journalists are trying to assess Afghanistan from a Western perspective, which is incorrect, as the country should be examined as an Islamic society.

The deputy spokesman of the Islamic Emirate (Taliban government), Hamdullah Fetrat, pointed out that since the Islamic Emirate came to power, the Sharia (Islamic law) rights of all citizens, whether women or men, have been guaranteed.
