Civilian movement in Gaza is dangerously chaotic, UN warns

United Nations, July 9 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today described as dangerously chaotic the displacement of thousands of people in Gaza City, in the midst of active fighting.

Following new evacuation orders from the Israel Defense Forces, the entity warned of the lack of safe places in the besieged enclave where the population is fleeing in multiple directions without knowing where to go.

“Many have been displaced by the fire and bombing, and very few have been able to take their belongings,” said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary General António Guterres, on Tuesday.

The organization insisted on the need to protect the population as well as meet basic needs, a claim ignored by Israel after repeated evacuation orders to both the north and south of the Strip.

“Those who leave must have enough time to do so, as well as a safe route and a safe place to go,” the organization nevertheless claimed.

At the same time, the United Nations demanded more access and security for humanitarian operations in the areas where its warehouses or civilians are located.

The UN confirmed that the largest bakery it supported in Gaza was forced to close following the latest evacuation orders, meaning significant quantities of flour, sugar and yeast are expected to be lost.

The number of bakeries supported by the organization throughout the enclave is estimated at just 10 after the recent arrival of fuel, however their operation could be limited to one or two days due to the scarcity of diesel.

Humanitarian organizations only had half a million liters of fuel during the first week of July, and more than two million liters in June, well below the 400,000 that are estimated to be needed daily.
