Russia will follow the creation of the new government in France

Russia's presidential spokesman, Dmitry Peskov
Moscow, Jul 8 (Prensa Latina) Russia will be closely watching the creation of the new government and the new political alliances after the legislative elections in France, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today.

In the opinion of the Russian authorities, French voters are clearly in a search process, Peskov commented to journalists on Monday during his regular meeting with the press in the Kremlin.

The opponents of the extreme right in France resorted to the tactic of “cordon sanitaire” in the second round of the early legislative elections to contain the advance of Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN) party and prevent it from obtaining an absolute majority of 289 deputies in the lower house.

More than 200 politicians withdrew their candidacies after the first round to increase the chances of other pretenders, able to face the RN at the ballot box.

The leftist coalition New Popular Front (NFP) exceeded all expectations and won 182 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior.

Second place went to President Emmanuel Macron’s Together coalition, which won 168 seats, also above expectations. Rassemblement Nationale, which was predicted by voting intention polls to win 175 to 205 seats, was relegated to third place with 143.

The leader of the France Insoumise, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, addressing his supporters, declared that President Macron must recognize the defeat suffered in the elections, dismiss the incumbent prime minister, Gabriel Attal, and allow the leftist coalition to form a new cabinet.

According to the politician, the leftists are ready to realize their own political program and rule out forming a union with the opponents of Macron’s coalition.
