The previous week, the election of Costa, who replaces the Belgian Charles Michel, the continuity of Ursula von der Leyen as president of the European Commission and the appointment of Kaja Kallas, until now prime minister of Estonia, as High Representative for Foreign Policy, replacing the Spanish Josep Borrell, were approved.
Sanchez and Costa discussed the challenges and priorities of the European Union (EU) for the next five years.
The President of the Spanish Government valued Costa’s appointment, highlighting his conciliatory profile and his ability to forge consensus in order to give political impetus to the most strategic and prospective issues affecting the EU.
During the meeting, according to Moncloa, other major debates to be opened for this new legislative cycle were addressed, such as the enlargement and reform process; the new Multiannual Financial Framework; the geopolitical context; and the EU’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa.
Sanchez also referred to the need of improving the competitiveness of the community bloc, in order to achieve more and better jobs, together with guaranteeing the financing of European public goods, essential to fight against climate change and guarantee peace in Europe.
