The Foreign Ministry explained that the measure was “a response to Romania’s previous unjustified decision to declare a diplomat from the Russian Embassy in Bucharest persona non grata.”
The Romanian Foreign Ministry announced the measure on May 24 and attributed “actions which contradict the provisions of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations” to the Russian diplomat in question.
Previously, Romanian security forces had reported the arrest of a Romanian citizen for allegedly photographing North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) military installations and transferring the photos to a diplomat from the Russian Embassy.
The Russian Embassy in Bucharest rejected the accusations against its employee, calling them unfounded. Moscow warned that it would respond to these actions by Romanian authorities.
