Indigenous organization will not participate in mobilizations

Quito, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) The president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE), Leonidas Iza, reiterated he will not participate in the mobilizations against the elimination of fuel subsidies, which began here today.

Iza explained that, although they support and welcome all protest actions carried out by social organizations, they will not be in the streets on this occasion.

According to the indigenous leader, this type of mobilization decisions, within the indigenous movement, are not taken overnight and require a broader process of information.

To reach the 2019 uprising, a decision was made and the measure was organized three months in advance. For the 2022 protests it took almost a year, he said.

However, Iza clarified that the organization is preparing to give a “sustained response” to the government of Daniel Noboa for this and other measures it has been implementing.

By the way, this Tuesday, Conaie and its affiliates will march to the National Assembly to deliver a bill on consultation and free, prior and informed consent.

The objective -he said- is that the communities are the ones who know first hand and pronounce themselves regarding projects or actions to be developed in their territories that may affect them.
