The request for political prosecution against Sommerfeld was raised by Jhajaira Urresta, member of the Citizens’ Revolution (RC) movement, after the Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito on April 5 to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas.
Noboa defended his Foreign Minister and accused the assembly members of the RC, the PSC and Construye of agreeing to advance the prosecution against Sommerfeld.
According to the president, it is a maneuver aimed at “speeding up a trial of the woman who has had to make diplomatic decisions that no one else would have dared: Gabriela Sommerfeld.”
On her X profile, the foreign minister thanked Noboa for his trust, which “forces me not to tremble” and “to move forward without fear.”
Foreign Minister Sommerfeld has been questioned by political groups at the Assembly as a result of the crisis with Mexico, a country that severed diplomatic relations after the attack on its embassy.
