Brazil bans Meta from using user data for AI systems

Brasilia, Jul 2 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) today issued a preventive measure prohibiting the company Meta, owner of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, from using user data for artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

Linked to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, this federal agency understood that the U.S. technology and social media conglomerate did not provide the necessary information so that users “were aware of the possible consequences.”

Meta told the R7 news website that it is disappointed with the ANPD’s decision and stated that “this is a setback for innovation and competitiveness in AI development.”

The determination was published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette of the Union and also establishes a daily fine of 50 thousand reais (about 10 thousand dollars) in case of non-compliance.

Such arbitration was approved by the Director Council in Deliberative Circuit, which considered that there were preliminary findings for the issuance of the preventive measure.
