Fico repeatedly opposed arms supplies to Ukraine and its North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) membership. On May 15, an attacker shot him five times.
The gunman was arrested. Fico was taken to hospital, where he was released in late May.
The Interior Ministry, in turn, affirms that the shooter fired Fico solely for political reasons and is currently serving a life sentence.
