President of Ecuador says that maneuver seeks to censure his FM

Quito, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, affirmed that the opposition today seeks to censure his Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, through a political trial promoted with maneuvers in the National Assembly (Parliament).

Legislators of several political forces withdrew this Sunday the signatures of support to the petitions to impeach three former officials of the government of Guillermo Lasso.

This Monday a virtual session of the Audit Commission of the Assembly is scheduled to formalize the withdrawal of the signatures in support of the trials against Lasso’s former officials.

In this way, the processes against Noboa’s ministers are accelerated, among them, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, accused for the violent Ecuadorian police raid to the Mexican embassy in Quito, last April 5.

Noboa defended Sommerfeld and accused the assembly members of the Citizen Revolution, Social Christian Party (PSC) and Construye of agreeing to “drop” the lawsuits against Pablo Arosemena, Sebastian Corral and Andrea Montalvo to advance the interpellation of the Chancellor.

For Noboa, this is a maneuver that seeks “to hasten a trial against the woman who has had to make diplomatic decisions that no one else would have dared: Gabriela Sommerfeld”.

The minister also made a statement on the social network X and thanked Noboa for his confidence, which “forces her not to tremble” and to “move forward without fear”.

Foreign Minister Sommerfeld has been questioned by political groups in the Assembly as a result of the crisis with Mexico, country that broke diplomatic relations after the assault on the headquarters of its embassy to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who was taking refuge in the legation.
