Argentines recall Juan Domingo Perón 50 years after his death

Buenos Aires, Jul 1 (Prensa Latina) Social and political organizations will pay tribute to former Argentine President Juan Domingo Perón (1895-1974), on the 50th anniversary of his death.

As part of the tributes, a ceremony chaired by Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof will take place at 11:00, local time, at the 17 de Octubre Historical Museum, in San Vicente, where the remains of the general are kept.

The 19-hectare facility houses the largest and most varied collection of objects and documents belonging to Perón and hosts the exhibition Justa, libre y soberana (Just, Free and Sovereign), which reflects Argentina from 1945 to 1955.

On the other hand, at 17:00 hours, local time, a monument in honor of the three-time head of State will be inaugurated in this capital, while at 19:00 hours, a mass in his memory will be held at the Cathedral of Cordoba.

Considered one of Argentina’s most relevant politicians, Perón is recognized for the application of policies in favor of the working class and social justice.

Under his mandate and at the initiative of his second wife, Eva Perón (1919-1952), Law 13 010 on women’s suffrage was passed in 1947, which was a milestone in the defense of women’s rights.

He died of a chronic ischemic heart disease during his third term as head of the Argentine government.

After his death, his widow, María Estela Martínez, took over the presidency. She was ousted in 1976 by a coup d’état that started the worst civil-military dictatorship in the country, which lasted until 1983.
