At the stroke of eight o’clock in the morning, the time set for the opening of the polling stations, Mujica arrived at a small school in El Cerro, a municipality of the capital.
Accompanied by journalists, the veteran political leader stated that these elections must be mandatory for citizens, as national elections are, the latter will elect the president and the integration of the Parliament in October.
Mujica fulfilled his tradition of being one of the first to vote, even now that he is recovering from a radiotherapy treatment for esophageal cancer.
The former president argued that the Broad Front is renewing itself, and deemed that unlike what happened in the 2019 internal elections, the leftist grouping will not make the mistake of splitting over the appointment of the candidate for vice president.
“This time there is a political agreement for it¨, he referred to the pact for the one who arrives second to go along with the chosen presidential candidate.
Mujica, leader of the Popular Participation Movement, backs up the candidacy of Yamandu Orsi, whom the polls put ahead of the mayoress of Montevideo on leave Carolina Cosse, in the Front’s competition.
If such predictions come true, the Broad Front ticket for October would be made up of Orsi and Cosse for presidential and vice-presidential candidate respectively, but this will be decided at the polls.
