Guterres praised the peaceful resolution of Wednesday’s incidents, when General Juan Jose Zuñiga, head of the Army, alongside a group of military officers, attempted by force to take control of the country.
Bolivian President Luis Arce confronted Zuñiga, ordered him to demobilize the rebels and shortly after, he appointed other military commanders in the Big House of the People amid the shouts of hundreds of people who gathered to support him in the Government headquarters.
As General Commander of the Army he appointed Major General Jose Wilson, who in his first public speech ordered the return to the barracks of all the soldiers.
Zuñiga was arrested and the Prosecutor’s Office ordered the beginning of legal actions to start a criminal investigation against the general.
Right after these actions, the head of the UN called on all actors, particularly the Armed Forces, to protect the constitutional order and preserve a peaceful climate.
