In view of the current scenario, President Bernardo Arevalo will discuss with the heads of different political parties the possibility of decreeing a state of calamity.
According to the analysis, the measure would seek to speed up the management of funds to work on domestic emergencies.
The Undersecretary of Risk Reduction Management of CONRED Maria Leal stated on Thursday to Emisoras Unidas that “some time ago, experts talk about climate variability but now they are seriously talking about climate change.” Authorities warned at the beginning of the month that Guatemala was about to face a season of unusually intense rainfalls, with records that could exceed the average of between 25% and 50%.
“Therefore, our efforts are focused on preventing the effects and working on emergencies caused by weather conditions,” Arevalo remarked.
