EU approves its first vaccine against Chikungunya

eu-approves-its-first-vaccine-against-chikungunya
Brussels, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The European Commission (EC) authorized the first vaccine in the community block against Chikungunya, a virus transmitted through mosquito bites.

The institution informed that the immunizer will be allowed for people over 18 years of age.

The Community Executive assured that Chikungunya is not endemic in the European Union (EU), but pointed out that climate change causes an increase in mosquitoes that transmit serious diseases.

In such a scenario, a recent report by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed the presence in 13 countries of the tiger mosquito, capable of carrying the virus.

Brussels authorized the marketing of the vaccine with the approval of the 27 EU countries after the European Medicines Agency gave its approval, and it will now be up to the governments to decide the conditions for its administration.

The EC also announced that it will finance with 500,000 euros a pilot program to eradicate the dengue mosquito in Cyprus, currently, the only EU country where it has been found.

Specifically, the program will use the sterile insect technique, which consists of rearing and releasing in the wild numerous sterilized male insects with the aim that they, together with the female mosquito, will die without reproduction.
