Angola carries out second phase of polio vaccination campaign

Luanda, Jun 28 (Prensa Latina) The second phase of the vaccination campaign against polio began in Angola in 11 provinces of the country and will last until June 30.

According to a note from the Ministry of Public Health, children under five years of age will be vaccinated in Luanda, Bengo, Benguela, Cuanza Sul, Lunda Norte, Lunda Sul, Malanje, Moxico, Uíge, Huambo and Zaire.

The campaign plans to immunize more than three million children, according to Rádio Nacional de Angola, while the coordinator of the National Expanded Vaccination Program, Alda de Sousa, told Jornal de Angola that four million doses of vaccines were prepared and seven thousand teams were formed for this stage.

The first phase took place from May 16 to 19 this year.

The campaign was carried out in response to the detection of a case of polio in the province of Lunda Norte and the presence of the virus in two other territories.

Following the identification of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (PVDV2) in environmental samples of sewage collected by the surveillance site located in Sequele town center, Cacuaco municipality, in Luanda, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended urgent vaccination.
