“We condemn the coup against the foundations of democracy as well as the attack on democratic institutions and the legal government in Bolivia,” said the diplomat who quoted a statement from Iran’s Foreign Ministry.
When repudiating the attempted coup, Kanani noted how in a short time the constitutional government managed to reestablish law and order and retake the power legally achieved by President Luis Arce, with the popular vote at the polls.
Arce, as president of the Plurinational State, reacted with composure to the attempted coup and appointed Major General José Wilson as new general commander of the Army, who in his first public action ordered the return of all soldiers to the barracks.
Hours earlier, on Wednesday afternoon, troops led by Juan José Zúñiga, who was dismissed earlier this week as commander of the Bolivian army, stormed the presidential palace in La Paz and took up positions in the Murillo square, where key government buildings are located.
