Government of El Salvador maintains open war against gangs

San Salvador, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) The government of El Salvador maintains a relentless war against gangs, in which the decrease in the rate of homicides caused by criminal groups stands out particularly.

The reduction in homicides is due to the Territorial Control Plan, which was launched on June 20th, 2019, and the emergency regime, which was approved by the Legislative Assembly, both of which are essential tools for fighting gangs.

Thanks to the security policy applied by the government, 2023 ended up being the safest year in the country’s history, after finishing with a rate of 2.4 homicides per 100 thousand inhabitants, a figure very distant from the one back in 2015 (106.82). 2024 is expected to exceed those results.

The Territorial Control Plan, in its first phase, showed good results by reducing the average number of homicides and extortions by 57 percent, between 2022 and 2023, according to statistics from the Attorney General’s Office of the Republic.

This Wednesday, a leader of the Mara Salvatrucha, and 15 members of La Libertad received sentences of up to 100 years in prison for organized crime, homicides, and extortions.

These actions and the sentences are demonstrative that the government is keeping an open fight with criminal groups. Now the population is waiting for the Executive’s actions to begin the development of the nation’s economy, without security threats.
