Dengue cases on the rise in Panama

Panama City, Jun 27 (Prensa Latina) The Ministry of Health (Minsa) confirmed today that to date five thousand 306 cases of dengue fever have been reported, a significant increase compared to the same period in 2023, when two thousand 483 patients were registered.

According to the statement of that portfolio, if compared to the figures of 2022 (1,634 cases), the current statistics show an alarming increase.

The regions with the highest incidence of dengue are Panama metro, Colon, West Panama, Chiriqui, Bocas del Toro, North Panama and East Panama, in that order.

So far this year, 14 deaths have been recorded, mainly in Colon, Chiriqui, Panama metro, Panama east and western Cocle, the message adds.

Dengue presents itself abruptly after an incubation period that varies between five and seven days, and the disease goes through three distinctive phases: febrile, critical and convalescent, said the Minsa.

In that sense, the experts specified that they continue working to mitigate the spread of the virus, including public awareness campaigns and specific actions to control the mosquito vector population, the Aedes aegypti.
