“In light of the criminal act of sabotage,” the 5th prosecutor’s office, which belongs to the first of these territories, and the 74th national prosecutor’s office with competence in organized crime were designated for the inquiries, Attorney General Tarek William Saab wrote on X account.
He explained that both departments will investigate and sanction the “serious facts that occurred” in the aforementioned infrastructure, where some criminals intended –through vandalism– to make the bridge collapse through “cuts that caused serious damage.”
The Public Prosecutor’s Office warned that those found responsible for acts of sabotage on the nation’s public services “will be punished with the maximum penalty.”
Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez on Tuesday denounced the attempted terrorist sabotage on the Angostura Bridge, over the Orinoco River.
Plans to damage the facility were detected through the regular dynamics of attention and maintenance to the infrastructure, which was built in 1967 and is more than 1,600 meters long.
Rodriguez commented that the evidence at the scene made it clear that the theft of strategic material was not involved, but that the intention of the well-articulated plan was to damage the vehicle viaduct, because the cut wires were not removed by the wrongdoers.
The perpetrators had to descend about 50 meters to reach the base of the bridge and under very difficult conditions, given the high temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and the lack of oxygen at the site, she explained.
The vice president pointed out that extremism called for violence to prevent the July 28 elections and they wanted to assassinate President Nicolás Maduro to prevent him from being the people’s candidate.
