On his X profile, the president thanked Cademartori, who was also a member of the Communist Party of Chile (CPCh), for his example and consistency.
“My respect and affection to the family of Don Jose Cademartori and the CP comrades,” Boric wrote on X.
Sending their condolences were former Public Works Minister Sergio Bitar, Ñuñoa Mayor Emilia Rios and former Education Minister Jorge Arrate.
Originally from the city of La Serena in the Coquimbo region, Cademartori was an industrial engineer, writer, academic, and politician.
He went into exile in 1976 and lived in Venezuela and the then German Democratic Republic (GDR).
He returned to Chile in 1988, shortly before the referendum that ended the Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990).
