On a press conference, the group detailed that “judges, prosecutors and corrupt landowners are not seeking respect for the right to property, but rather to guarantee the illegality with which landowners” have always dispossessed indigenous people, among others, of their land.
He pointed out that this situation creates a humanitarian crisis that has already affected hundreds of families and, he warned that these are illegal actions, not only because of procedural flaws, but also because they violate the Constitution, international standards and other instruments signed by the State.
The Committee expressed that the actions against communities in the department of Alta Verapaz, the municipality of El Estor, Izabal, Jalapa and Escuintla, violate the human rights of hundreds of families living in poverty, abandonment and exclusion.
They have been dispossessed, robbed and burned, lost their crops and have been affected in terms of food, water and housing, one of their representatives remarked to the media.
Likewise, the representative added that children are unable to continue studying, are affected by severe weather, diseases and with high probabilities of being affected by epidemics, with no possibility of medical attention.
