The Cuban Foreign Minister declared that it will be a victory for the truth against the injustice of those who harassed, locked up and isolated him in a narrow cell for daring to “put the empire in the dock”, as the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro stated.
In the Cuban minister´s message, Assange was released this Monday and traveled to his native country, Australia, following an agreement with the United States government to plead guilty to a felony under the Espionage Act, after spending the last five years of his life in a British prison.
The journalist would thus put an end to a long legal process that began when he was held responsible for the largest leak in the history of the United States of secret documents in 2010-2011, on the Pentagon’s military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.
According to WikiLeaks, the departure of its creator is the result of a global campaign that involved grassroots organizers, press freedom advocates, legislators and leaders from across the political spectrum, all the way to the United Nations.
