Chilean journalists welcome Julian Assange’s release

tpassangepurgatorio
Santiago, Chile, Jun 25 (Prensa Latina) In a statement released here on Tuesday, the Metropolitan Council of the Chilean Association of Journalists expressed deep satisfaction with the release of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Freedom of press is an essential pillar of democracies and human rights and Assange’s imprisonment is a reminder of the challenges faced by communicators in the world, the Association said.

In Chile, journalists have played a crucial role in denouncing multiple cases of corruption and abuse of power, which have had an impact on public confidence towards institutions, the document added.

The press release was replicated on Tuesday by several media outlets, including Crónica Digital and Le Monde Diplomatique in its Chilean edition.

The Journalists’ Association also expressed its regret for the decision by the government of President Gabriel Boric not to intervene diplomatically in Assange’s case.

However, it valued the mobilization of hundreds of people who signed a letter urging La Moneda Palace to act in defense of the fundamental principles of this profession.

Meanwhile, Senator Daniel Nuñez, from the Communist Party of Chile, wrote in his X account, ‘Finally Assange is free.’

Assange was imprisoned for five years in a high security prison for denouncing the US massacre in Iraq.’

The legislator added that freedom of press won a battle against the powerful, but undoubtedly there are still more aberrations to denounce in the world.

On the same social network, the organization Allende’s Socialismo welcomed Julian Assange’s release after a brutal and merciless persecution.
