Cuban scientist wins international cooperation award granted by China

Beijing, Jun 24 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Professor Pedro A. Valdes Sosa on Monday received China's International Science and Technology Cooperation Award for his contributions to brain research.

In exclusive statements to Prensa Latina, the director of the China-Cuba Joint Laboratory of Neurotechnology, in Sichuan province, expressed his gratitude and the commitment that such a high distinction from the Chinese Government entails.

It is an acknowledgement ‘that also corresponds to the group of researchers from the Cuban Neuroscience Center of BioCubaFarma and the Chinese collaborators who over the years have cooperated in brain research, and the concrete results that benefit the population.’

Valdes Sosa stressed that since 2015, the joint laboratory has contributed to training students from both countries and other members of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), as well as being a center for the work of the Global Brain Consortium that brings together more than 30 nations.

The Cuban Neuroscience Center and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China founded this laboratory, which has shared knowledge for the use of diagnosis and prevention of brain diseases,’ he said.

Among the most outstanding results in this regard are those reflecting the effects of early malnutrition on brain development throughout life.

The center contributes to understanding how to diagnose brain disorders and learning disorders, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, as well as studying the effects of brain infections.

The Cuban neuroscientist received a congratulatory letter from Chinese President Xi Jinping late last year for his achievements in research as part of cooperation between the two nations.
