Sudanese paramilitaries claim to control capital of West Kordofan

Khartoum, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) Sudanese paramilitaries claimed Thursday that they control the city of Al Fula, capital of West Kordofan, and an army military base in the area.

Al Fula is in a border region with South Sudan, and also with the Sudanese area of Darfur, where strong clashes have been developing between both contenders in recent times.

The fighting in the city of Al Fasher, the last government bastion in Darfur, in western Sudan, continued with serious effects on the civilian population.

International organizations warned of mortality projections, according to which over 2.5 million people, about 15% of the population in Darfur and Kordofan, the most affected regions, could die by the end of September.

Since mid-April, 2023, this nation has been plunged into an internal war, after conflicts over power between the army chief Abdel Fatah al-Burhan and the leader of the paramilitary RSF, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, flared up.

In Sudan, where a military coup d’état occurred in 2019 and another in 2021, a conflict broke out in which thousands of civilians were slaughtered, including some 15,000 in the West Darfur region alone.
