High temperatures to increase forest fires in Greece and Turkey

Athens, Jun 20 (Prensa Latina) High temperatures in Greece and Turkey are causing forest fires in both countries, the destruction of hundreds of hectares of vegetation and the forced evacuation of hundreds of people.

This situation will continue over the next few days, with peak temperatures likely to reach 30 degrees Celsius, according to both countries’ authorities.

At this time of the year, highs usually range between 20 and 33 degrees Celsius, but they have reached 45 degrees Celsius in several regions last week.

Greece sent 62 firefighters, two helicopters and two air tankers to extinguish a forest fire on the island of Euboea, northeast of Athens, which is one of dozens of forest fires declared daily in Greece.

In this context, the Greek civil protection minister, Vasilis Kikilas, called on citizens to be very careful so that forests, property and people are not at risk.

Elsewhere in Türkiye, although the fires raging in the west appear to be under control, two villages in Çanakkale province, southwest of Istanbul, were evacuated as ten planes and seven helicopters were sent to the area because of a new fire.

The blaze is affecting about 575 hectares, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Ibrahim Yumakli said, indicating that 340 hectares are forests and the rest is non-forest land.

He warned that winds could reach storm levels in the next five days, and traffic restrictions have been imposed until the authorities declare the area under fire control.
