During a visit to displaced people’s camps in Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, the European representative noted the overcrowding and numerous shortages they face there.
According to Radio Okapi, Lenarčič toured Bushagala, in Nyiragongo, and also the CBCA Ndosho hospital, where he met with people who have had to leave their homes due to violence and armed conflict, as well as with the sick and wounded.
He also spoke with the governor of North Kivu, Major General Peter Chirimwami, with officials of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the DRC (Monusco) and with the heads of several agencies and non-governmental organizations, the source said.
On his X account, the EU commissioner highlighted the work of the International Committee of the Red Cross, “which saves lives every day,” and called for the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law.
He also highlighted the work of Monusco, for its fundamental role in protecting sites for displaced people, and further stressed the importance of ensuring that the withdrawal of this force “does not create additional risks for the local population and humanitarian workers.”
