The warehouse was located north of the city’s international airport, in the Goudji neighbourhood, and health authorities have so far confirmed nine dead and 46 wounded.
Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby confirmed that the fire occurred in an ammunition depot in the strategic reserve camp and left human and material damage.
He expressed his condolences to the families of the dead and a speedy recovery to the injured.
He also announced that an investigation will be opened to determine the causes and locate those responsible for the incident.
Other government officials attending the situation on the ground said the fire is under control and the area is being secured.
According to eyewitnesses, the firing lasted for about 30 minutes and could be seen from several kilometers away.
