The current NATO’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the organization is close to confirming Rutte as its head, while countries such as Hungary and Slovakia support the candidate.
According to reports, Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Rutte’s only rival, will soon withdraw his candidacy.
During a press conference with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Stoltenberg confirmed in Washington that the alliance is close to agreeing on the nomination of a new Secretary General and named the Prime Minister of the Netherlands as a strong candidate.
The nomination for that post will be adopted at the NATO Summit in the United States next July, although Stoltenberg’s powers expire on October 1.
