Earthquake in northeastern Iran leaves four dead, dozens injured

Tehran, Jun 18 (Prensa Latina) Four people dead and over a hundred injured is the preliminary balance of an earthquake that occurred on Tuesday in the Iranian province of Khorasan Razavi, in the northeast of the country, near the border with Afghanistan.

The earthquake had a magnitude close to five on the Richter scale and was felt strongly in the city of Kashmar, where dozens of people are feared to be trapped under the rubble.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located 14 kms from the city of Kashmar.

This city has a population of 96,000 inhabitants, and is located 64 kms from Torbat e Heydarieh, which has 125,000 residents.

According to local authorities, institutions are taking measures to deal with the emergency.

The head of the local prefecture, Jodzhatola Shariatmadari, said that several people were killed and others were injured by the collapse of a building in the city of Kashmar.

It was further reported that rescue work began immediately as rescuers searched for other people who may have been trapped.

Iran suffered on November 12, 2017 the Kermanshah earthquake, considered one of the worst in the region that left over 600 deaths and nearly 9,000 injured.

That incident occurred on the border between Iran and Iraq, in the homonymous city with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale.
