In a congratulatory message for the founding anniversary of the news agency, the politician recalled that after the revolutionary triumph of 1959, the historical leader of the process, Fidel Castro, and the government of the Caribbean island “were besieged by a storm of lies and a barrage of misinformation.”
He emphasized that the Western media thus attempted to poison the world and turn it against the Cuban Revolution, but their objective failed thanks to the birth of Prensa Latina and the launching of Operation Truth.
“Today (…) the need for the existence of Prensa Latina has not diminished in an increasingly polarized world, where the dominant Western media shamelessly spread lies and misinformation about countries and governments that do not subscribe to their world,” he said.
Prensa Latina –he stated– must continue to be the beacon of truth and hope that will never go out.
Smith added that his letter was written on behalf of himself and the people of Belize, to greet the agency’s new anniversary this June 16. ef/jcm/ymr
