Panama on yellow alert due to heavy rainfall

Panama City, Jun 15 (Prensa Latina) Panama’s National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) recalled on Saturday that much of the country remains on yellow alert for the incidence of heavy rainfall, accompanied by winds.

The entity’s report specifies that the provinces of Darien, West Panama, Cocle, Los Santos, Chiriqui, Veraguas and the Embera Wounaan region remain under the surveillance policy.

According to the Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, the weather deterioration responds to the interaction of several atmospheric systems, with low pressure, intertropical convergence zone, Central American gyre and the passage of tropical wave No. 5, which could generate instability.

It also warns of the intensification of southern winds, bringing humidity over the Pacific slope, generating changes in maritime conditions, and possible risks of floods and landslides.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Operations Center is coordinating with various authorities for constant monitoring, surveillance in vulnerable areas and weather conditions, especially the Ngäbe Buglé region towards the Pacific and the Panama East region.

SINAPROC recommended the population of these territories not to visit trails, mountains, rivers, streams and lakes; and those living in risk areas, to keep posted and abide by the prevention measures of the emergency and security agencies.
