WHO celebrates World Blood Donor Day

Washington, Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) The World Health Organization (WHO) is celebrating World Blood Donor Day on Friday to raise awareness of the significance of blood donation for the health of patients who need blood transfusions.

The date commemorates the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian pathologist and biologist who discovered and classed the blood groups. Thanks to this, he received the 1930 Nobel Prize for Medicine.

Blood transfusion is a medical procedure in which blood is transferred from one person to another to replace blood components lost due to surgery, injury, bleeding disorder, or disease, including cancer, hemophilia, and diabetes.
