Haitian Prime Minister to strengthen police capacity

policia-haiti-1-2
Port-au-Prince Jun 14 (Prensa Latina) Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille said he is committed to strengthening the capacity of the national police, which is at a disadvantage with the gangs that control 80% of the capital.

Conille also intends to improve the working conditions of law enforcement officers and provide the force with the necessary tools to carry out its mission efficiently and professionally.

In this context, the National Network for the Defense of Human Rights reported that from 2015 to date 323 law enforcement officers lost their lives in the line of duty.

The entity’s report also lists 68 attacks on police infrastructure from 2021 to 2024.

This Wednesday, on the 29th anniversary of the Haitian National Police, the union of this sector criticized the high command for not putting in place any measures to protect officers.

Recently, the Haitian National Police Union called for the urgent provision of means to curb the spread of gangs.

Heavy equipment, weapons, ammunition, bulletproof vests and ballistic helmets are vital for law enforcement at this time against criminal gangs, a statement stressed.

The union’s general coordinator, Lionel Lazarre, commented that many policemen fled their homes for fear of reprisals from gangs, and today they sleep in police stations with their families, and not even the state provides them with a subsidy.
