According to statements by the General Director of the Thermal Power Station Ruben Campos, even though causes are being investigated, the incident cropped up while maintenance staff was repairing the stairway access to the tank that stores the national hydrocarbon.
Campos added that the national crude oil has a high level of impurities and is too volatile, which makes it so hard to predict the extinction time.
During the incident, there was a high availability of oil in the tank, which can hold about 10,000 cubic meters, which favored the work of injecting foams.
The director assured journalists that in addition to the company’s own fire station, brigades from the Matanzas Fire Brigade were also working there.
