Russian and Cuban FMs meeting in Moscow

Moscow, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov welcomed his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez, in Moscow to look into issues related to deepening the bilateral strategic partnership.

The Cuban Foreign Minister arrived in Moscow on an official visit after participating on June 10th and 11th in the BRICS Plus Ministerial Council, which he described as a key player in global geopolitics.

Rodríguez told Prensa Latina on Tuesday that Russia is “one of the most important counterparts of Cuba” from the economic, commercial, investment, tourism, among other areas, points of view, and confirmed that the meeting with Lavrow is geared precisely towards political coordination, and very importantly, towards economic cooperation between both countries.

The spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Maria Zakharova, stated in anticipation that the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Cuba would discuss aspects related to political, commercial, financial and scientific-technical ties.

Before the meeting, Rodríguez was scheduled to pay tribute to the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro (1926-2016), at the monument erected in his honor in the Sokol district of Moscow, and will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, tribute site to the heroes and martyrs of the Soviet people.

The official visit to Moscow of the Cuban minister responds to the invitations made by Lavrov in his tours of Havana in 2023 and 2024, and occurs after the participation of the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, in the commemoration events for the 79 anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War, on May 9th, when he was also received by his counterpart Vladimir Putin.
