Guatemala dismantles further clandestine drug trafficking airstrips

Guatemala City, Jun 12 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala's National Civil Police (PNC), the Army and the Public Prosecutor's Office have dismantled another two clandestine airstrips allegedly used for drug trafficking, an official source informed.

Interior Minister (MINGOB) Francisco Jimenez posted on X that both unauthorized routes were located in the eastern department of San Marcos, bordering Mexico.

The first was 791 meters long by 10 meters wide, while the second was 752 by 14 meters, and the message was accompanied by a video of the destruction of one of them.

The minister described as forceful the joint work in the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime, to prevent transnational groups from bringing aircraft into the country without the corresponding permits.

The process of eliminating these sites involves meticulous work by the security forces, including excavations and controlled explosions, according to previous reports.

The army and the PNC located 39 drug trafficking planes in 2020 in different departments of the nation, mainly in the eastern Peten, also bordering Mexico; 20 ones a year later; and nine of them in 2022.

The entities involved reduced illegal landings to three in 2023, allegedly used for drug trafficking, a figure that fell to zero so far this year, based on data from the Ministry of Defense.
